Fast and accurate bacterial detection is vital for many fields like food safety control and infectious diseases diagnostics. In this study, terahertz spectroscopy shows its potential to be a novel bacterial detection modality. Different species of bacteria can be clearly distinguished by absorption coefficients due to their different water contents. More importantly, living and dead bacteria of the same species also show different terahertz absorption, which are attributable to their different hydration levels.
